Compatible or Third-party cartridges are efficient, legal and accessible.
- 22 Jul, 2025
Third-party or compatible cartridges are cost-effective, perfectly legal, and easy to access. Yet, many printer brands try to lock users into using only their expensive original cartridges — and one of the biggest ways they do this is through automatic firmware updates.
Most printers come with auto-updates enabled by default. These updates run silently in the background and often install without your knowledge. The problem? These updates aren’t meant to improve your user experience — they’re designed to detect and block compatible cartridges, stopping your printer from recognizing them.
After such an update, your printer might show errors like: “No Toner” or “Cannot Detect Cartridge”. This means you’re left without a working printer, forced to either return your affordable cartridge, wait for a fix, or spend extra on the brand’s original ink just to get back to work.
To avoid this, disable the “Firmware Auto Check” in your printer settings. It’s simple, smart, and helps you stay in control of your printing costs.
